Greece: The Cyclades Islands  –  May 6, 2014

The Cyclades are an archipelago to the east of Athens in the Greek Isles. They’re a bit farther from the mainland than the Saronic Gulf Islands, making them perfectly situated for cruising away from the majority of day boats while still keeping you close enough to access the international airport at Athens as part of a one-way itinerary. In other words, the Cycladesoffer the best of both worlds: beautiful beaches and quiet harbors with just the right hints of spice and civilization.

Mykonos is a must-visit island on any Cyclades itinerary. It holds a special place in Greek mythology, named for a descendant of the god Apollo and believed to be the site of a battle between Zeus and the older Greek gods, known as the Titans. Today, Mykonos is most famous for its beaches, which have earned it the nickname “the Capri of Greece.” Summer days are almost always sunny, and a local airport operates on a regular schedule during prime charter weeks in July and August.

Also a must-visit part of any Cyclades itinerary is the island of Delos, which is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece. Forget the tourist sites back in Athens; this is where history is still being unearthed, and where you can see unforgettable finds including the Terrace of Lions.

The Cyclades also include the island of Santorini. You can cruise the entire world and never again see a harbor approach like the one at Santorini, where the capital city, Fira, sits atop a cliff looking down over the aqua-blue lagoon. Visiting Santorini by sea is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
