luxury superyacht charter in US

Your first time stepping onto a luxury superyacht charter can feel euphoric. Maybe you got invited by a coworker or friend, or perhaps it’s your first time booking one yourself. Whatever the case, you may have questions about ship etiquette. When you book a superyacht charter, say a St Barts Yacht charter, you’ll want to be familiar with the do’s and don’t’s on board. Paradise Yacht Charters is here to provide you with the best advice for first-timers.

What To Do On A Luxury Superyacht Charter

  • Respect the crew. Your ship’s crew members are people just like you and deserve your respect and admiration. The staff is there to serve you, and it’s only the proper and polite thing to do. Gratuties, given to the captain to be distributed evenly among the crew at the end of your charter are at the charterer’s discretion but are certainly customary and expected.  A gratuity in the 10% – 20% range (more if you’ve been hosting mega parties in Cannes or for New Year’s Eve in St. Barts) is common.
  • Follow safety regulations. Safety rules are there for a reason, and without proper consideration, someone could get seriously hurt.
  • Make yourself at home. This ship is your temporary home, so get cozy and treat it like it’s your space. The crew is there to keep things neat and clean, but be respectful of the yacht and items on board.
  • Take your shoes off.   Shoes are not allowed on yachts.  Please leave them by the gangway or the door as you enter the yacht.  There is usually a shoe basket available for your shoes at the entry.
  • Bring soft luggage. Storage can be limited. Pack light and bring soft luggage that does not take up too much space.  Bathing suits and beachwear are the primary items you will need. Caftans are popular while onboard the yacht.   Perhaps one or two nice outfits for going clubbing depending upon your location.  In the BVI’s you may not need these at all.  In St. Barts or Monaco you may need more.  But try to minimize the number of suitcases you bring.

What To NOT to Do On A Superyacht

  • Expect free childcare. If you want to build in childcare aboard the ship, bring your nanny. The crew is not responsible for watching your children and have other jobs they need to do to ensure your trip is running smoothly. ‘
  • Break the law. The crew is required to turn you into the authorities If you partake in illegal activity onboard. In most countries, no exceptions will be made on your behalf, and you could serve jail time.
  • Go into private areas. Just like anywhere else, you don’t walk into areas that are for “employees only.” Respect the crew’s space, and do not take it upon yourself to go into restricted areas.
  • Break ship rules. Many ships have a no smoking policy onboard. Follow these rules, primarily because of the potential for damage to occur. You wouldn’t want to be left with the damages bill. Remember, these ships are not yours; respect them!
